THE PROFESSIONAL BOOK MINDER
Version 1.00
THE PROFESSIONAL BOOK MINDER is three level software designed
for use by business, government, schools, and individuals who
need to catalog detailed information about books, articles
and technical papers. The Professional Book Minder allows
you to catalog a library and then locate a book, or article
in a magazine, by any one of up to 14 characteristics. For
example, you'll be able to get a list of all of references to
George Washington in a history library or find all the
information on chemical recovery boilers in a technical
library.
Another nice feature of Book Minder is that it can be used
with books, magazines, newspapers, technical papers or almost
any other published material. Entries can be made for
individual articles allowing you to list the individually
unique information contained in each article.
The Professional Book Minder also provides a note pad
feature. This allows you to keep notes about a
particular book, chapter, or article. They can be edited and
updated at any time. (See the section on the Note Pad).
Please note that The Professional Book Minder is different
from our other specialty database software in that the third
level provides the note pad function instead of additional
data fields. The User Manual is generic for all of our
collector's software and may refer to the third level as
having data fields.
+
THE THREE LEVELS OF THE PROFESSIONAL BOOK MINDER
The three levels of The Professional Book Minder are:
Standard, Librarian and Research. The first two levels
provide data fields with the second, Advanced level,
providing fields for the more detailed information about a
book.
The following is a list of the information that can be
entered at each level.
Standard Librarian Research

The line names marked with an astericks (*) can be changed to
suit your specific requirements.
The following are descriptions of what each line can be used
for. You are not limited to this information. You can enter
anything on any line and The Professional Book Minder will
still be able to conduct correct searches and sorts.
Standard Level
Title - two lines of seventy characters each are provided.
This provides 140 characters for long book titles. During
searches each line is searched individually. Enter the name
+
of the book, chapter and/or article on these lines. (You may
wish to put the book title on the first line and the chapter
name on the second line)
Author - the name of the author(s) who wrote this
book/article.
Keywords - enter the words that describe this book/article.
These should be individual words that describe the important
topics, ideas, or concepts covered.
Subject - enter a description of the subject.
Catalog Number - the catalog number used to locate this
book/article
Librarian Level
Publisher - the name of the publisher. The city the publisher
is located in could also be entered here.
Copyright - the date of the copyright
Location - a description of where this book/article is
located. (i.e. University library, personal library, city
library, etc.)
Type - enter a description of the type of book/article.
Types could be text book; technical paper; newspaper article;
diary; etc.
Borrower Name - the name of the person who has borrowed this
book/magazine.
Date Due - the date the book/magazine is due to be returned.
Note-1 thru Note-3 - enter your comments or notes. These
lines are full searchable and, using the Super Utilities, can
be sorted and alphabetized.
Note Pads
The Note Pad allows you to enter up to 20 lines of notes
about the book/article. There are two ways to use the Note
Pad.
(1) The software has three operating levels. If you set it
for the third level (select LEVEL on the Main Menu, then push
F5), a PgDn prompt will appear on the Librarian Level screen.
Pushing PgDn at this point will display the note pad.
+
(2) You can access the Note Pad at any time from the Standard
Level screen by holding down the CTRL key and pushing PgDn.
The Note Pad will only use disk space if it is accessed. If
you do not access the Note Pad for a specific entry, no disk
space will be used for notes associated with that entry. You
can access the Note Pad using the Editor to change or add a
note to any entry at any time.
The notes will be stored in a separate file that ends with
"MEM."
Typing a note is very simple. Just type in the information.
A word wrap feature will automatically keep each line at the
correct length. If you type more that 20 lines, the
information you enter will move the entire screen to the
left. None of this additional information will be saved.
When you have finished with the Note Pad push the ESC key.
The note will automatically be saved and you'll return to the
data entry screen.
+
INFORMATION ABOUT FILES
The Professional Book Minder creates a separate file for the
Standard and Librarian levels. If both levels are used,
fewer entries can be stored in a given space. The following
chart provides a rough estimate of the number of entries that
can be put within a certain space (360K is the space on a
double sided, double density floppy disk):
Indexed Indexed
360K 1 Megabyte 360K 1 Megabyte
Standard 1000 2800 700 2000
Librarian 500 1400 400 1100
Please note that the above does not include spaced used by
the Note Pads. The number of entries that can be stored on a
disk, if you are using the Note Pads, will depend on the
number of entries that have notes associated with them.
The Professional Book Minder also needs to use a data file
called BOOKCAT.PRO. This file should always remain on the
same floppy, or in the same directory as the BOOKSPGM.EXE
program. This file is used to store the settings used by
BOOKSPGM.EXE.
The BOOKCAT.PRO file is very important. This file contains
the information used by the security system. If this file
should be erased from the disk you're using, you will not be
able to use the software. You can regain access by copying
BOOKCAT.PRO from a backup disk (you may need to reset the
filename).
We have also provided a utility called RESET.EXE. If you've
lost your BOOKCAT.PRO file, run RESET.EXE to build a new
BOOKCAT.PRO and regain access. Since RESET.EXE is the
generic key that opens the security files by resetting the
security codes you should store the disk containing it in a
safe place.
+
In creating data files The Professional Book Minder uses the
following filenames.
The Standard level data file has an extension of .DAT
The Librarian level data file has an extension of .DA2
The file holding the settingc used by each filename has an
extension of .MDR.
If you are using the default filename of BOOKS, then at the
Research level the following files would be created.
BOOKS.DAT - Standard level data
BOOKS.DA2 - Librarian level data
BOOKS.MDR - Setting for the BOOKS files
BOOKS.MEM - Note Pad data file
BOOKS01.NDX - Index of the first title line (field)
BOOKS02.NDX - Index of the second title line (field)
BOOKS03.NDX - Index of the author
e first title line (field)
